Attach start and end date-time instead of just date to issues

Hi, I was asked where I work whether we could use redmine for our helpdesk's purposes.
- One requirement would be to have a creation time and a completion time attached to issues
- Another would be to make it possible to autoupdate these fields when there's a workflow transition (*->closed ecc)
Has anyone used redmine for this purpose? Could you advise on the best way to do this?
If the only way is through a custom plugin, could you point me to an example on how to bind to workflow transitions?
