API with PHP

I am having problems with authorization for the PHP API. I have enabled it within the settings in Redmine but get a 401 response. I have tried a couple of things in posts I have found but have had no luck. If i try the same call via curl in command line it works fine. If I try and access the xml file via the browser it also works ok.
