Upgrading from 0.84 to 1.0RC - best approach?

Hi,
We have redmine 0.8.4 running on Server2003 set up using the Bitname Redmine install. This has been ticking over nicely for a while now but I want to look at moving to a more uptodate release in a few weeks - preferably 1.0RC.
Should the update for this following the update instructions be straightforward?
Providing the database is backed up should it be easy to revert back to 0.8.4 if there are problems?
