Internal Error after MySQL conversion from latin1 to utf8

Added by Martin Jungowski almost 11 years ago

We're running a Redmine 2.5.0 wiki on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Ruby 1.8.7, MySQL 5.5, rails 3.2.17, passenger 4.0.38) with a ~100MB MySQL database. For historical reasons (we've been running this wiki for several years now) we've used latin1 for the database encoding. However, we now need to incorporate some Polish speaking colleagues which is why I would like to convert the database to UTF8. And it has almost worked like a charm - conversion took place by altering the database and every single table to utf8. Polish special signs now display correctly where before they would only render as a ? and I'm pretty happy.... Except that now occasionaly searching returns an internal error. It's reproducible because it only happens when searching for certain words, but these words never work. For example: searching for 'windows' works, searching for 'svnet' doesn't work. Searching for 'svnet windows' or 'svnet1' works, however searching for 'svnet 1', 'svnet a' or 'svnet ab' doesn't work, searching for 'svnet abc' does work (but doesn't return any results). It's only certain words that don't work, I'd say more than 99% of all search queries work just fine. When it doesn't work I get an "Internal error" after a few seconds, Redmine log throws an Error 500 exception. As soon as I restore the pre-conversion dump search is back to normal behavior and I can search for everything just fine.

This is the log for searching for 'svnet' with the latin1 database:

For comparison, here's a log entry from a search that does work with the utf8 database:

When copy & pasting the search query into mysql it returns the expected results so it's not a query problem. Not sure what the problem is though, any ideas?

Problem solved. Not sure what exactly caused it but updating from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS/Ruby 1.8.7/Apache 2.2 to Ubuntu 13.10/Ruby 2.0.0/Apache 2.4 fixed it. It's also become significantly faster than before (given the exact same configuration and resources) - loading a ticket with 500+ replies went from ~10s to less than 4s.
