Store user/member as information only

Hello,
I need to assign a person to a project as an information only.
I guess the obvious way would be to add him as a user, create a role and then add the user/role to the project. This person should not be able to login to redmine though.
Another way would be to create a custom field where the persons name could go. However, I would like to choose the person from a list.
The perfect scenario would be to create a custom field that could store a person found in LDAP, without necessarily being a user in redmine. Does anyone know if this is possible?
