Inability to sort customfield

I have created a custom field with multiple checkboxes and set the field as "use to filter". However, when viewing under the issues tab, I am unable to sort tickets by this custom field, and the column title for this field is black, not blue, which may reflect the lack of sort function. Is there no way to sort a custom field with multiple checkboxes? If so, how? If not, how does one submit a feature request?
