Using REMOTE_USER for Auth in Redmine 5.0.x (formerly redmine_env_auth)

Trying to migrate from Redmine 4.x to 5.x, I have trouble replicating the CAS authentication which I used to do with the redmine_env_auth plugin.
The plugin hasn't been touched in years, and installing it on 5.0.1 doesn't seem to work.
Is there another option in Redmine 5.x to auth with REMOTE_USER?
PS: Wrote a Wiki entry with my experience to install Redmine 5.x on Ubuntu 20.04 here
