User type custom field - selection from 100's of users

Description
When there are 100's of users on a project, the selection of a user (or users) from the user type custom field can be very difficult. It would be nice to switch the user selection to the style of the "add watcher", when the user count exceeds a specific number. That number could be fixed (e.g. 30) or set by the admin.
