h1. Redmine on CentOS installation HOWTO
2
3
{{>toc}}
4
5 2 Stephan Schuberth
This works with CentOS versions 5 and 6 and describes how to get Redmine 1.3.2 set up.
6 1 Stephan Schuberth
7
h2. Assumptions
8
9
* Apache is up and running
10
* Apache has previously been used and works quite well
11
* MySQL is up and running
12
* MySQL has previously been used and works quite well
13
* Your are logged as root
14
* The next steps are done successively without errors
15 25 Stephan Schuberth
* You can of course use vi/vim as your editor of choice instead of nano, if you know what you are doing. ;)
16 1 Stephan Schuberth
17
h1. Install pre-dependencies
18
19
<pre>yum -y install zlib-devel curl-devel openssl-devel httpd-devel apr-devel apr-util-devel mysql-devel</pre>
20
21
h2. Ruby
22
23
Things after *#* are comments, and it is no use to type this stuff in ;)
24
<pre>cd ~/Downloads # YOUR FOLDER OF CHOICE
25
ftp ftp.ruby-lang.org
26
</pre>
27
28
h3. FTP session
29
30
<pre>ftp> Anonymous # USERLOGIN
31
ftp> 'none', just hit Enter # NO PASSWORD
32
ftp> cd /pub/ruby
33
ftp> get ruby-1.8.7.pXXX.tar.gz # XXX is currently 358, as of 03/2012
34
ftp> bye</pre>
35
36
h3. Untar
37
38
<pre>tar zxvf ruby-1.8.7.pXXX.tar.gz</pre>
39
40
h3. Install
41
42
<pre>cd ruby-1.8.7.pXXX
43
./configure
44
make
45
make install</pre>
46
47
h3. Check installation
48
49
If this does not work, it is probably because there is no ruby at /usr/bin to be found.
50
<pre>ruby -v</pre>
51 22 Stephan Schuberth
If it works, skip directly to "RubyGems 1.4.2".
52
53 1 Stephan Schuberth
54 6 Stephan Schuberth
h3. Fix dependencies
55 1 Stephan Schuberth
56
(Only in case _ruby -v_ is *NOT* working)
57
<pre>which ruby # TO CHECK WHERE IT SHOULD BE
58
whereis ruby # TO CHECK WHERE IT IS INSTALLED</pre>
59
_which_ returns like /usr/bin/ along with other directories (where ruby is expected to be), and _whereis_ returns like /usr/local/bin/ruby (thats where ruby actually lies).
60
61 6 Stephan Schuberth
h4. Fix via adding /usr/local/bin to $PATH
62
63 9 Stephan Schuberth
(Do this with your editor of choice, if you do not like nano.)
64 6 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>nano /etc/profile</pre>
65
66
Make the section with _pathmunge_ look alike like this:
67
<pre>#Path manupulation
68
if [ "$EUID" = "0" ]; then
69
    pathmunge /sbin
70
    pathmunge /usr/sbin
71
    pathmunge /usr/local/sbin
72
    pathmunge /usr/local/bin # ADDED THIS
73
else
74
pathmunge /usr/local/bin after # ADDED THIS
75
    pathmunge /usr/local/sbin after
76
    pathmunge /usr/sbin after
77
    pathmunge /sbin
78
fi</pre>
79
80
OR ADD THIS AT THE END OF THE FILE:
81
82
<pre>nano /etc/profile
83
export PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/bin"</pre>
84
85 15 Stephan Schuberth
This sets the PATH for all Users beside root. For this setup you want to change the PATH for root, too:
86 6 Stephan Schuberth
87
<pre>nano ~/.bashrc
88 1 Stephan Schuberth
export PATH="$PATH:/usr/local/bin"</pre>
89 15 Stephan Schuberth
90
Logout your user and login again, to make the changes work.
91 6 Stephan Schuberth
92
h4. Fix via Symlink Creation
93
94 42 Stephan Schuberth
This is not recommended, since if the ruby dependency is broken, others will likely be later on, too. Repair this by adding the folder to the $PATH variable like described before, else _gem_, _rake_, _bundle_, _passenger-install-apache2-module_ will not work either... you would have to create symlinks for them later on, too.
95 6 Stephan Schuberth
Symlinks are created like this
96
97 1 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>ln -s /usr/local/bin/ruby /usr/bin/ruby</pre>
98 6 Stephan Schuberth
99 8 Stephan Schuberth
h4. Verify ruby to be working
100 6 Stephan Schuberth
101 16 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>which ruby # MUST RETURN PATH TO RUBY
102
ruby -v # MUST RETURN RUBY VERSION
103 1 Stephan Schuberth
cd ..</pre>
104 16 Stephan Schuberth
105 19 Stephan Schuberth
Now it has to work. When changing $PATH variable, did you log out and log on again with your current user?
106 18 Stephan Schuberth
If this does not function properly, other things later on will also not work.
107 1 Stephan Schuberth
108
h2. RubyGems 1.4.2
109
110
*Does not work with Gems 1.5!*
111
112
h3. Download
113
114
<pre>wget http://production.cf.rubygems.org/rubygems/rubygems-1.4.2.tgz</pre>
115
116
h3. Untar
117
118
<pre>tar zxvf rubygems-1.4.2.tgz</pre>
119
120
h3. Setup
121
122
<pre>cd rubygems-1.4.2
123
ruby setup.rb</pre>
124
125
h3. Check installation
126
127
<pre>gem -v</pre>
128
129 21 Stephan Schuberth
h3. Do things work?
130 1 Stephan Schuberth
131 21 Stephan Schuberth
... else the cause is the same as with the ruby problem before...
132 1 Stephan Schuberth
133
h2. Passenger
134
135
h3. Regular install method
136
137 44 Alex Tremblay
Requires C++ compiler to complete.
138
Note: in some CentOS-like linux distros (RHEL, Amazon Linux) the C++ compiler does not come as part of the GCC compiler package. If that's the case, it can be installed with the following command:
139
<pre>yum install gcc-c++</pre>
140 1 Stephan Schuberth
141
<pre>gem install passenger
142
passenger-install-apache2-module</pre>
143
144 14 Stephan Schuberth
The install process is interactive and you wil be told what to do. How to install missing dependencies is described exactly. JUST READ!
145 1 Stephan Schuberth
146
h3. Alternative install method
147
148
Install mod_passenger RPM for Apache from the following location:
149
150
> http://passenger.stealthymonkeys.com/
151
152
_RHEL/CentOS 5_
153
<pre>rpm -Uvh http://passenger.stealthymonkeys.com/rhel/5/passenger-release.noarch.rpm
154
yum install mod_passenger</pre>
155
156
_RHEL/CentOS 6_
157
<pre>rpm --import http://passenger.stealthymonkeys.com/RPM-GPG-KEY-stealthymonkeys.asc
158
yum install http://passenger.stealthymonkeys.com/rhel/6/passenger-release.noarch.rpm
159
yum install mod_passenger</pre>
160
161
h2. Restart Apache
162
163
<pre>service httpd restart</pre>
164
165
h1. Install Redmine
166
167
h3. Download
168
169
Download page:
170
> http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=1850
171
172
<pre>wget http://rubyforge.org/frs/download.php/75910/redmine-1.3.2.tar.gz # GET LATEST VERSION ON RUBYFORGE</pre>
173
174
h3. Untar
175
176
<pre>tar zxvf redmine-1.3.2.tar.gz</pre>
177
178
h3. Copy the folder to its HTTP document root folder
179
180
<pre>mkdir /var/www/redmine
181
cp -av redmine-1.3.2/* /var/www/redmine</pre>
182
183 13 Stephan Schuberth
h1. Link Redmine to the Database
184
185
h2. Install MySQL DB Server
186
187
<pre>yum install mysql-server
188
chkconfig mysqld on
189
service mysqld start
190
/usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation</pre>
191
192
h2. Create a MySQL database to use with Redmine
193
194 41 Stephan Schuberth
Start the mysql client:
195
<pre>mysql -u root -p</pre>
196
The version you have is shown in the welcome message.
197
Enter the following commands in the mysql console: (without repeating the prompt ;) )
198
<pre>mysql> create database redmine character set utf8;</pre>
199 25 Stephan Schuberth
200 13 Stephan Schuberth
h3. Latest MySQL Version
201 1 Stephan Schuberth
202 41 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>mysql> create user 'redmine'@'localhost' identified by 'my_password';
203
mysql> grant all privileges on redmine.* to 'redmine'@'localhost';
204
mysql> \q</pre>
205 1 Stephan Schuberth
206
h3. For versions of MySQL prior to 5.0.2
207
208 25 Stephan Schuberth
Skip the 'create user' step and do instead:
209 41 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>mysql> grant all privileges on redmine.* to 'redmine'@'localhost' identified by 'my_password';
210
mysql> \q</pre>
211 13 Stephan Schuberth
212 25 Stephan Schuberth
Now the database and a user to be used with it is created. Also the user has the rights to work on the database that was created.
213 13 Stephan Schuberth
214 25 Stephan Schuberth
h2. Configure database.yml
215 13 Stephan Schuberth
216 29 Stephan Schuberth
There you have to enter the user:password combination (redmine:my_password) in the config file, so Redmine can actually talk to the database (redmine).
217 25 Stephan Schuberth
218 27 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>cd /var/www/redmine/config
219 28 Stephan Schuberth
cp database.yml.example database.yml
220
nano database.yml</pre>
221 1 Stephan Schuberth
222 27 Stephan Schuberth
Change it to look like:
223
<pre>production:
224
    adapter: mysql
225
    database: redmine
226
    host: localhost
227
    username: redmine
228
    password: my_password
229
    encoding: utf8</pre>
230
231 31 Stephan Schuberth
The other entries are not important, since we will use only the production environment. But if you would need the development or test environment, don't forget the create additional databases. *Don't* use the same database for production and testing or development environment!

h2. Dependency management with bundler
236
237
For more info go to the "bundler site":http://gembundler.com/.
238
239
h3. Install
240
241 45 Marek Grossman
<pre>gem install bundler</pre> or if You have a problem try <pre>gem install bundler --verbose</pre>
242 1 Stephan Schuberth
243
h3. Create Gemfile
244
245
<pre>nano /var/www/redmine/Gemfile</pre>
246
247
h3. Register gems
248
249
Put the following into the file you just opened:
250
<pre># file: /var/www/redmine/Gemfile
251
source "http://rubygems.org"
252
gem "rake", "0.8.3"
253
gem "rack", "1.1.0"
254
gem "i18n", "0.4.2"
255
gem "rubytree", "0.5.2", :require => "tree"
256
gem "RedCloth", "~>4.2.3", :require => "redcloth" # for CodeRay
257
gem "mysql"
258
gem "coderay", "~>0.9.7"</pre>
259
Save and exit the editor.
260 20 Stephan Schuberth
261 1 Stephan Schuberth
h3. Install the provided dependencies
262 10 Stephan Schuberth
263
<pre>cd /var/www/redmine
264 1 Stephan Schuberth
bundle install</pre>
265 12 Stephan Schuberth
266
h2. Set environment to "production"
267
268
Rails has the concept of environments to represent the stages of an application’s lifecycle: test, development, and production by default.
269
Specify your choice with the RAILS_ENV environment variable.
270
Production has less verbose logging and is a bit faster, testing and development environment are not needed anyway for your Redmine.
271
272 32 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>nano /var/www/redmine/config/environment.rb</pre>
273
274 33 Stephan Schuberth
Uncomment the following line at top of the file:
275 12 Stephan Schuberth
276
<pre>ENV['RAILS_ENV'] ||= 'production'</pre>
277
278
h2. Generate the session store
279
280 40 Stephan Schuberth
(In the terminal again...)
281 12 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rake generate_session_store</pre>
282
283
h2. Migrate the database models
284
285
<pre>RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rake db:migrate</pre>
286
287
h2. Load default data (optional)
288
289
<pre>RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rake redmine:load_default_data</pre>
290
291
Follow instructions.
292
293 34 Stephan Schuberth
h2. Rename dispatch CGI files in /redmine/public/
294 12 Stephan Schuberth
295 34 Stephan Schuberth
<pre>cd /var/www/redmine/public
296 35 Stephan Schuberth
cp dispatch.cgi.example dispatch.cgi
297
