Redmine first impressions
Added by Doc D over 10 years ago
I'm working with a small startup and we're looking at multiple solutions for project management, issue tracking and time tracking.
Redmine looks like a great product. However, the install process basically sucks. I'm installing under Ubuntu 13.10 and it's basically completely broken. Even if it wasn't completely broken, there are still just way, way too many steps involved. I'm always confused when projects write documents outlining the install steps and those steps could have just been written into the installation scripts.
Anyway after a very long night, I've got it up and running under ubuntu 13.10 (did I mention the install is completely broken?). I honestly believe if the install wasn't such a cluster that redmine would be the defacto standard.

Thank you for your valuable feedback.
Redmine is not a commercial project and does not have many developers. We develop redmine in our free time and we like what we do, even if it sometimes keeps us from spending time with our families (did I mention that we like what we do?).
We welcome contributions from the community and as such, are very happy if you sent us a patch or if you give detailed installation instructions on the wiki.
You need not reinvent the wheel, there's already a whole lot of information on installation on various flavors of Ubuntu. You are welcome to improve these wiki pages :-)

Hi,
to avoid such installation nightmare, I was using Redmine installers from Bitnami. I do not have experience with Linux, I am using installers for Windows. But I assume, the Bitname installer for Linux has similar quality!
My first installation was with Redmine 1.4.2 and now Bitnami installer is already available for current Redmine 2.5.1.
At the beginning of Version 2.x, there were several issues, which were different to 1.x and which were unsufficiently explained. But both documentation and installers became better on each version!!
