Requirements with Redmine?

Added by Robert Schneider almost 10 years ago

I'm wondering if it is reasonable to use Redmine for requirements management. Using the tickets for requirements seems a good approach. However, I don't know how to organize them. Main problem seems to me is that the ticket list does not list and group tickets as a tree view. I know that there is something like a tree but this cannot be sorted or grouped. I really don't know how to get a good overview.

I already thought to put the requirements content into wiki pages. In the wiki a tree of child pages can be displayed. I could then inlcude the page content into a ticket description (with {{include(ReqInWikiPage)}} macro). But I think this is also not the best way.

Gradually, I come to the conclusion that I should use another tool for this. But then I'd like to have an integration to Redmine somehow. Maybe all is better with Jira & Co?

Do you have any ideas? Do you manage requirements in Redmine?

Let me say that I'm not that experienced with requirements management. But I think that using a tool is better than doing it in Excel or so. But is Redmine sufficient for this task?

Regards,
Robert

I have not (yet) tested this, but sooner or later I'll be in the same situation.
You could try this plugin: http://redmine-re.korem.de/projects/redmine-re, tell us how you like it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've already seen and tried it with the online demo. Looks good but seems to be in a alpha state. I think this will take some time until it gets matured. I'm curious if this project becomes successful.

Well, theres a formal process for gathering and documenting requirements, at least if you adhere to the principles of Business Analysis) (and of course there's Volere).

As the process is, at least partly, quite similar to project management, but I have not yet come around to imagine / develop / document a way to do this in redmine.

That said, my feeling is that redmine should be suitable for the task anyway, it might take some imagination and some tweaks here and there, but overall, it should be doable.

http://redmine-re.korem.de/projects/redmine-re is not able to access anymore, seems available at https://github.com/tmerten/redmine_re, however it's more about visualization, and support to 3.4 with some bugs untill recent update 03.08.2018.

I track down the paper1 talk about it.
