Email Functionality

Is there anyway to send out an email to a person that has been assigned an action item prior to the due date of the action item.
For example, if an action item requires a response by one week from today's date and email would be triggered to the person who is assigned to that action item say today (1 week in advance) as a reminder that the due date is coming.
