Purpose of checkbox column on issues page

This is likely a silly question, but I can't find the answer and it's not intuitive (at least not to me!)...

There is a checkbox column on the left of the issues tab; what's it for and how's it used? I would have thought this was a means of selecting issues to be exported as CSV/PDF or opened in a new browser window.

OK, got it. There seems to be a problem with the installation I'm using as the right click drop-down menu options aren't displayed.
