Redmine 1.2.1 asking for 'Redmine API' HTTP auth credentials when trying to add issue relations

Whenever I try to add issue relations (e.g. related, blocking or following etc.) to an issue in my Redmine 1.2.1 installation, I am asked for a username and password, and I am logged out of Redmine.

The dialogue box says:

Redmine API

It's exactly the same behaviour as this bug report .

Can anyone suggest how I can fix it?
