Migrating a custom field list to new 'user' type?

Greetings,

I am in the process of upgrading our Redmine version. Previously I had created a custom field of type list and populated it with names to compensate for the lack of a user type. I am very happy to see that implemented and would like to start using it. But I would like to some how migrate or convert the existing field if possible. Is this possible or should I just delete the old field and make a new one?

What happens if you just plainly delete the old custom field is what I've described in RE: What happens when deleting custom field?.
