What are the rules for showing (diff) in the task history?

I have an redmine installation 2.3.3 with about 2000 tickets.
I remember seeing the (diff) in some of the tickets after editing, but now I can't find this anymore. Even after changing text with "edit" it won't show the modification. Neither the modification date will be shown. Is that normal behaviour?
