How to manage Groups / users
Added by Mickael Gautheron over 6 years ago
Hi everybody !
I have already some projects in Redmine which I using only users and not group.
But for a new projetc, I would like to use users with groups, I explain :
On a request, I would like to addign a request to a team (group). To avoid problems during vacancies.
But if I had the field "assign to", I would have users and groups inside but I would like to have something like this :
Assign to group :
- Technical group
- Accounting group
...
Assign to a person :
- Paul
- George
...
Is it possible to do it ?
And we would like to have notifications only for some persons assign
We have an other softwar to manage tickets for an other project, it called "ITOP", and it's possibile to do it
I can't find the answer on internet

You can assign tasks to groups, but i think you need to check a tickbox somewhere in the administration/settings. (Can find the spesific one if you want me to).
At my workplace there are two officeworkers, and 4 "proper" workers ( :P ), so i've made groups with 2+2+2+2 "proper" workers, so the office guys can assign work to two people.
But there are probably plugins you can use, to add multiple asignees

Thanks you for the answer.
I can assign task to users and group, but I would like to dissociate user and group.
I think I will keep my configuration with only users.

You can assign tickets to a group. If you do that, everybody in the group will see this ticket in his/her list (assigned to "me"). You have to define an organisational rule that someone has to "pick" the ticket and assign it to himself. So he/her changes assignment from group to own user. From this on the ticket is no more assigned on group level but to an individual worker.
This prevent tickets from getting "lost" and helps distributing workload.
In general it is a good idea to use groups. Be aware that users can be in multiple groups as rights are always "additive" and thus not intersecting. This is very helpful in defining e.g. a "base" group for your redmine in general and additional groups for different tasks. I would not recommend to define groups associated to individual projects.
Cheers

Thanks you very much to this answer.
I juste have to create groupe and associate users to groups ?
And in my field "assign to", I will have users and group mixed ?

Exactly: define a group (say "helpdesk") and assign users to it (users can be assigned to multiple groups).
Assign ticket to this group "helpdesk".
Tickets will show up in "assigned to me" when member in this group. You can assign tickets to one group or either one user and change this whenever you want.

Don't forget: there is a global configuration setting for tickets (you need admin for that) to allow "tickets assign to groups". You will find this in admin --> configuration --> tickets (3.3)

Is it this option ?
Allow assigning requests to groups => I have to activate this option to use groups to assignate ?
