Best Practice for moving redmine installations

Added by steve tierney over 14 years ago

We have moved our Redmine installation to a new server, and are looking for a fool proof way to take users who visit the old Redmine site to the new one.

Has anyone come up with a way, so that the old Redmine installation can automatically re-direct users to the new Redmine location?

Well, I usually take an easy way and adjust dns entry for Redmine url to point a new IP address.

In this particular environment, Redmine was just one of many web apps running on the machine, and one of the only ones that moved, so altering the DNS was not an option.

I ended up stopping Redmine, and installing Apache on port 3000, with a page informing them that the installation had moved to a new home, and then after 30 seconds re-directing them to the new site, along with creating some mod_rewrite rules for Apache.
