New custom fields datatypes (format)

Hi, we would like to expand datatypes for custom fields.
Any best practices/where to start?
We would like to develop this in best effort, so it could be later merged into trunk - if Redmine Gurus will agree :)

Maybe check this plugin that extends custom fields types already:

Hi, extended field plugin is fine, but doesnt working on redmine 3.0.2. Could anyone do such a plugin for Redmine 3.0.2
