Reply to individual forum posts and indent responses

It appears as though Forum posts can only be added at the bottom, a flat hierarchy.
It would be much more useful to reply to individual forum posts, have the response directly underneath and have it indented. This way there can be subthreads within each topic, and the readability is increased with the indenting.
Here is an example of how this is done in Drupal:

I would love that feature too. I understand that excessive indenting might significantly reduce post width which is often critical when discussing technical stuff but it's a question of design, you can do slight indentation.
What would be really useful is collapsing of response threads when navigating in a long discussion. Of course that would be easily doable with jQuery once the reply referencing mechanism is implemented.
