A workaround for this SEEMS to be:
- install tiny_tds-2.1.2
- edit Gemfile
- change RUBY_VERSION >= "2.0" ? "~> ... John Bliss

I used this thread to get past "Step 5 - Session store secret generation." That involved manually installing tiny_tds... John Bliss
