Redmine Logo?

Added by Jim Mulholland almost 16 years ago

Our team was going to create a Redmine Mac OS X Fluid webapp. However, we were not sure what the logo should be to symbolize Redmine on our Mac dock.

Does Redmine have an official logo?

Me three. The logo is nice. I might prefer title-case Helvetica to whatever font is being used there, but that's a minor grumbling.

Actually, I think that is Helvetica. Anyway, I'm happy.

+1 for Martin's last one (5). I prefer the white background but we can use both based on the context. Unless anyone has a reason why not, I'd like to unofficially make that Redmine's logo (Jean-Philippe has the final say).

Martin, would you be willing to release this logo under a permissive license? Ruby used the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license for their logo. It would also be nice to get some high quality files that we can distribute. I can host them if size is a problem.

Finally, I'd like to thank everyone for the submissions and feedback. It's refreshing to know that there is such talent in this community.

It's a subtle fonting difference, but I like this one better:

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Willie Ling almost 15 years ago

Heh, mine was never supposed to be an actually logo for Redmine. It's the button for the link to Redmine. Plus, all that gloss and dark colors aren't that inviting too. :P

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Willie Ling almost 15 years ago

Oops, no edit button?

Errr... Someone suggested I post this here so I did. I have to agree that I like Martin's better too!

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Shane Pearlman almost 15 years ago

I agree with brad on font. Frankly, now that we have a general consensus on a direction:

Martin, can you post the Vector of the log so that perhaps I can do a tiny rev with one of my designers and detail it? I don't imagine we will change much, just push a pixel or two.

On the nity gritty level, on the white bg version, I like the red hue on the word red, but the mine is a touch too washed out.

I didn't have Martin's vectorized version, but I did a quick pathing outline that should be enough to work from.

Based on the example icons here... I quickly made up a dock icon to be used with fluid.

redmine_logo_v2.png (10.9 KB) redmine_logo_v2.png Redmine fluid icon v2
redmine_logo_v2_grey.png (11 KB) redmine_logo_v2_grey.png Redmine fluid icon v2 grey

Can we get this theme somehow (or any of the themes that were showcased in this thread :D) ??? Pleease? :)

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Martin Herr almost 15 years ago

Hi Nikos,

the shown "themes" are just dirty firebug-mockups to show the usage of the "new" logo sorry

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Shane Pearlman almost 15 years ago

It sounds to me like we have (for the time being) reached a decision as a community. So what is next?

Can we run this by Jean Phillipe, get his blessing and then propagate the brand on the redmine.org site, in the svn build etc etc...

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Nicklas Holm almost 15 years ago

Great work Martin, it looks awesome! (for a dirty mockup ;))

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Eric Davis almost 15 years ago

Martin:

Could you send me the vectors for the logos along with a permissive license? Then I can contact Jean Phillipe directly about incorporate them into the Redmine.

Eric

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Eric Davis almost 15 years ago

I wanted to keep everyone updated about this. Martin has contacted me and we are in the process of getting the logo transfered. Once I have the SVG with a permissive license, I'm planning to let everyone do a few revisions to it. Then we can contact Jean Phillipe about incorporating it into the site.

I really like the wheel barrel logo it fits the name but the arch (flex) is more elegant. Maybe the wheel barrel logo can still be used in the lower left/right hand corner next to the "Powered by Redmine ... Jean-Philippe Land"?

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Eric Davis almost 15 years ago

I've gotten the logo from Martin Herr and have added it to a GitHub repository. Now I'd like to open up the design for anyone to tweak and modify itover the next few weeks. I've added instructions in the README describing how to send any changes back to me. Once we are ready, I'll work with Jean-Philippe Lang to get it incorporated into the Redmine designs.

Used the current Redmine Logo from the GitHub project and made a Fluid icon.

I have been reading this whole discussion through, but ever since I saw Martin's logo I thought the tunnel was a bit bare. I would like to see it with a ruby inside. It would also better describe what the arch stands for.

I did my best to throw something together. Obviously this is Ruby's ruby, taken off of Google Images. ;-)
If this were to be used, I don't think the ruby should shine as it does, so that it does not contrast with the rest of the image too much.

Martin's original logo in Helvetica (Condensed Bold?) is much nicer, especially because the name begins with an "R," which is one of Helvetica's most distinctive and classy letterforms. Plus, the kerning on Delicious is borderline offensive.

Regarding the concerns over using a commercial font, the fear is basically unfounded. As long as the designer has a valid license to the font in question, that license includes the right to produce materials for publication and personal gain using that typeface. That's why they're so expensive.

RE: Redmine Logo? - Added by Eric Voisard over 14 years ago

Hi All,

I concur with William: the 'R' Helvetica's style is much more classy than that straight-leg one. Imho, the first of Martin's proposals is still the best one. Well balanced, elegant, sound, not overloaded. Well: simple and beautiful.

I'm impatient to see it included in standard package. In how many years of discussion? ;-) ...

Cheers, Eric

I'm still waiting for someone to take up my offer and tweak the SVG from Martin. The source is here and all suggestions/tweaks are welcome.

Hi Eric,

mm, I saw in the repository that it's Martin's V5 that is there (btw, the SVG file didn't show up correctly with Inkscape 0.46). I guess there are no vector sources from Martin for V1 and we don't have any news from him...

How about a vote and a deadline?...

It showed up offset for me too, I think it's a Fireworks SVG or something.

I was hoping to get some people to do the minor revisions on it and then put them up for a vote.

Sorry.. Late to the party here, but I think "Flexible Project Management" is too general and doesn't accurately convey what redmine is, what it's for, or what's cool about it -- it makes it sound as if it competes with MS Project or the bazillion other things you get by googling that phrase. I see an adsense ad for "Home Builder Software" right now, and redmine would suck at that.

For now, in our organization, I'm billing redmine as our Software Change Management (SCM) Portal. We have entire project management departments, and "Flexible Project Management" wouldn't fly at all.

Redmine gives you a place to integrate all of the requirements, workflow, communication, and history of a software project. It's a Software CMS, where 'C' is either or both Content and Change. (SCCMS?) "Software Change/Content Management System"?. It's sort of a SoftwareNuke, although that's less than comforting as a phrase. It's a wiki, forum, bugtracker, task scheduler, ticket manager, even a blog, for all of your software projects, and all totally integrated with source control -- how cool is that? "Flexible Project Management" conveys none of this.
