Timeline in Redmine?

Added by SyRenity Now over 15 years ago

Hi.

Does anyone know of a way to create a time-line in Redmine, allowing to set dates for project milestones?

Thanks in advance!

You mean in the way of the Trac-timeline? Redmine provides the acitvity-module for that. See RedmineProjectActivity for a very basic description of it. I'll extend it soon to be a bit more descriptive. It shows the project-activity for the default-timespan configured by the Redmine admin in the Redmine Administration > settings (which I'll add to the relevant wiki-page also) and can be browsed by the user. Redmine also provides an global (cross-project) activity-view which can be reached with the link on the projects-overview on the above, right-side.

Milestones are implemented in Redmine slightly different. They are called versions and can have a slightly different behaviour if you are used to e.g. Trac. See RedmineProjectSettings for more info. Here you can also see how to set the due-date for the individual versions.

HTH.

Kind regards,

Mischa.

Hi.

Thanks for the answer, but I need something in-between versions.

This because my bosses want to see some time-line estimations about important features (which some of them included in each release), and to know where we stand.

Gantt is not good as it's too detailed, and having each major feature divided to several tickets, doesn't provide a good overview.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe you are more searching for a way to split several parts of an implementation of the solution for one major issue ánd being able to monitor %done ratio per parent and sub-issue?
If yes, see issue #443 (I now the number out of my head without having to look it up :).

If no, please provide more specific details about your requirement. What do you precisely mean with: "time-line estimations about important features (which some of them included in each release), and to know where we stand"?

Regards,

Mischa.

Hi

here is a nice widget for time-view: http://www.simile-widgets.org/timeline/

Let me explain:

We have each release consisting of several features, taking say 2-3 weeks. We basically want to have a time-line per each major feature, so we could know where we stand with general progress.

That all more or less.

Can it be easily attached to Redmine?

Ok, that looks clear. Here a proposal:
  • create a version for each release
  • create individual issues for each feature and assign them to the designated versions
  • while working through each version's assigned issues make use of the %-done field of each issue

With something like above you should get a pretty detailed view about the progress of a version by looking at the roadmap and the respective version views.

Thanks for the tip - but:

  • This doesn't seem to give me points on timelines for the features completion
  • I will need to manage basically 2 different releases - one for the dev team (with detailed ticket), and one for the boss.

Anything simpler? :)

Btw, if someone had a similar problem, where he needed both to provide the required depth for the dev team, and some kind of overview + schedule for the management, and solved it somehow, I'll be happy to hear this.

I found today something called "Timeline" in the 5PM (http://demo.5pmweb.com/).

The great part about it is that you can specify what gets into the timeline. If Redmine allowed to select which issues are going into the Gantt charts, I think it would solve my need pretty much.

Any idea if this supported, or I need to submit a feature ticket for this?

Thanks.

Answering myself :)

The Redmine 0.8.1 seems to allow produce Gantt's according to various filters (I didn't notice it because I'm still using 0.7.3).

I think this might be just what I need time for an upgrade.

You can try the (almost) up to date demo of the bleeding edge code of Redmine (which eventually will result in Redmine 0.9.0).

See the blogpost where the (re-)launch of the demo was announched also: http://redmineblog.com/articles/redmine-demo-now-available-at-demo-redmine-org

Thanks, will check this out.

Btw, this Heroku host rocks from design point of view.
