How to Mass-Populate a Redmine Database

I need to find a way to upload several hundred unique issues at a time. Given a knowledge of the database format, is it possible to use Excel, for example, to create the basic issues outside Redmine and bulk-upload them using a CSV version of the Excel data file?

As you can imagine, I'm trying to save myself some serious 'grunt work'. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
