Right server and provider
Added by Howie Meyer over 13 years ago
Hallo,
i am searching for a server host to use redmine for a project in germany.
I want to go with http://www.hosteurope.de/produkte/Virtual-Server
But as i am new to linux, redmine, ruby etc. there are a few questions.
Is it possible to run the bitnami redmine installation on a virtual windows server to
get it run ?
Or do i need the linux server, maybe this one: (http://www.hosteurope.de/produkt/Virtual-Server-Linux-XL) ?
If linux is needed, is there a good instruction manual, you can recommend, how to setup the parts ?
Thanks in advance,
Howie

If you want to use bitnami, I think you should rather see on their site what the installation requirements are for there package. I don't use them myself, so I can't say much.

I've never installed Redmine on windows, but I think installing it on linux will be easier if you know or have someone who knows his way around linux.
Regarding the sizing of the server you need, that really depends on the traffic you expect, especially the number of simultaneous users on the Redmine installation.

Well, the wiki here on redmine.org has a lot of installation instructions for different linux flavors as well as for windows, pick the one that suits you best.
Judging from your questions though, I'll slip in a little advertisement for the company I work for: finnlabs, we do Redmine customization and hosting and might be able to help, and we're located in Germany :-) There's also a few more companies on the CommercialOfferings page that can help, PlanIO for example is also a german company specialized in Redmine hosting.

Thanks Felix.
I will try the bitnami installation on a windows server. If it is not working, i come back to this.

bitnami redmine is working on a windows server. I only had to use other port adresses.
Thanks for your help.

Thought I add my two cents here, speaking from experience with a number of clients:
Bitnami is a great start to get Redmine up and running quickly. But the devil is in the details. It is important to update Redmine frequently, perform backups, etc., and this is where it becomes more complicated and time consuming. Luckily, there's a good howto by Bitnami regarding this. I recommend everyone using Bitnami reads this.
But then, we still see a considerable number of Bitnami users switching to Planio (Disclaimer: this is our company) after a little while. Planio is basically a specialized Redmine Provider run by Redmine enthousiasts and contributors. We do all the maintenance legwork for our clients and as we do it for so many of them day in and day out, it ends up being much cheaper than if everyone was spending time on upkeep themselves.
