"User" custom field does not have the option <<Me>>

I am trying to create a custom field that functions similarly to the "Assignee" field. For some reason when I use the "User" custom field it has the names of all members of the team, but does not give me the <<Me>> option.

Is there a way to get this to work with the <<Me>> option?

I forgot to mention that I am currently using Redmine version 1.2.1.stable.6317

Not with a vanilla Redmine. The implementation is different from the <<Me>>-substitutions since it's based on the mentioned project members.
