Best way to get to a more modern release (3.3.x to latest)?
Added by John Reynolds about 2 years ago
Hello,
I have a very much older install of Ubuntu 16.04 / Redmine 3.31. It's got a ton of data in it from long ago we'd like to move forward to the latest Redmine release. I'm perfectly find standing up a new Ubuntu 22.x server, etc. to get things going.
I'm wondering however how to bring the data and attachments forward to the new system. Has anyone attempted the upgrade from so "far" away in releases? Is there a best practice?
Thank you,

Hello John,
ee have updated from 3.2.1.stable to 4.2.3.stable.
The procedure in broad terms:
- Install new Redmine system incl. DB
- Copy data from old to new system
- Export DB on old system and import on new system
That is it in the basic. Plugins can be problematic, here I am currently struggling with the migration of DMSF.

Andreas

Hello John,
And one more thing to do after to what proposed Andreas Bruhn.
- Execute database migration.
About plugins:
It would be good first to upgrade Redmine without plugins. Then check compatibility of the plugins with the new version. If you go to version 5.x.x, you have to upgrade the plugins in most cases.

I upgraded to 4.2. and all is good I afraid before because I had a problem with upgrade Win 10 to Win 11 (that version doesn't like, very similar to Ubuntu/Linux) But my friend, didn`t upgrade Redmine and don`t disappoint
