issue when trying to install redmine-5.1.2 on ubuntu 24.04
Added by simo geo 6 months ago
Hello all
I crosspost this message here because I'm stuck when trying to install a new redmine instance, due to mysql2 gem :
I'm using ruby 3.1.0p0 (2021-12-25 revision fb4df44d16) [x86_64-linux] (installed with RVM) on Ubuntu 24.04 and I get this error when trying to install mysql2 :

An error occurred while installing mysql2 (0.5.6), and Bundler cannot continue.
In Gemfile:
mysql2
Mysql server is 8.0.36-2ubuntu3
I've also tried : `gem install mysql2 --with-mysql-dir=/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/` but I get this error message :
invalid option: --with-mysql-dir=/lib/x86_64-linux-gnuERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::OptionParser::InvalidOption)

To compile the MySQL bindings (i.e. the mysql2
gem), you need to install a C compiler (which you likely already have as you use RVM) as well as the MySQL client developer files.
On Ubuntu, you can install these with:
# Install the compiler suite apt install build-essential # Install the MySQL developer files to compile software against it apt install libmysqlclient-dev

Thanks for your reply, but both packages are already installed

In that case, please follow the advice from the error message:
To see why this extension failed to compile, please check the mkmf.log which can be found here: /home/ubuntu/.rvm/gems/ruby-3.1.0/extensions/x86_64-linux/3.1.0/mysql2-0.5.6/mkmf.log
Please check that file. It likely contains (among other rather verbose information) details about which library specifically could not be located / used and where it was searched for.

Hello Simo, It looks like you need an experienced Linux admin to fix the errors you are facing with the manual setup on Ubuntu.
I suggest using any readymade redmine docker container image for quick and easy setup.

RE: issue when trying to install redmine-5.1.2 on ubuntu 24.04 - Added by simo geo 6 months ago
Thanks for the suggestion David. I did handle this by changing the value in the gemfile from :
gem "mysql2", "~> 0.5.0", :platforms => [:mri, :mingw, :x64_mingw]
to
gem "mysql2", "0.5.4", :platforms => [:mri, :mingw, :x64_mingw]

Thanks for the update and for opening an accompanying issue with the the mysql2 project.
(Still, as a small addition: you should update your Ruby version. If you want/need to stick to Ruby 3.1.x, you should update to Ruby 3.1.6 because your current Ruby version 3.1.0 contains several functional bugs and security issues which were fixed in the meantime.)
