Effect of renaming a project's identifier?

Does anyone know the effect of renaming a project's identifier?

It's disabled on the project's admin page, but I'm tempted to update the database directly (projects table).

Currently it will only change the urls used for that project. Redmine can handle the change, if but it will break external links. e.g. http://www.redmine.org/projects/redmine/boards/2 would break if the "redmine" identifier was changed.

Hi!
I tried to develop plugin which would allow renaming project identifiers without any negative effect. Would appreciate help in testing and any suggestions.
