Add user settings in plugin

Hi,

is there a way to extend the user settings and store additional information for a user from within a plugin?

You could hook into the my/account page through view_my_account_contextual and add a link to a custom preferences page, or add some custom fields for your preferences. Everything else would need core modifications not (easily?) possible from a plugin.
