should work. It does not on my environment.

Redmine supports both Textile and Markdown formatting. It defaults to Textile where the syntax you have shown on the bottom is valid.

You can switch your whole installation to Markdown in Administration -> Settings -> General -> Text formatting. Note that any existing texts will not be transformed from textile to markdown if you change this setting. This would have to be done by hand if required.
