I don't think that's possible through the admin console. So when I need to change the identifier, I generally make it by a simple SQL query.

I guess this was locked in admin console only for persistence or URLs since identifier is part of them. Of course, I'm not 100% sure nothing else could be broken by a changed identifier, I just personnally never had problems with that.

For those who is still interested in this issue:

I have developed plugin for adding identifier aliases which also allows changing main identifier. Would appreciate any suggestions and especially help in testing.
