custom field documentation and usage

Added by Jon Lumpkin about 15 years ago

Am i missing it, or is there no documentation for using custom fields, other than how to set them?

Im curious, for example, from this ticket http://www.redmine.org/issues/4219 .

Its done, and there is code checked in for it, but im not sure how to use something like this.

Other than using some outside query (or writing a plugin), is there no way to query these 'other' (by other i mean versions, projects, etc...anything other than issues) types?

Secondly, what is the expected usage of custom fields in the first place? it seems like this would be great for queries, but from what I see, its nothing more than making an unordered list in the documentation (again, except for issues, which I know you can query on).

This seems a pretty close conclusion I'm afraid...

It's implemented indeed on the Redmine trunk. Now you can add custom fields to the versions which allows to add additional data bound to the version. This data (entered when editing a version) is then displayed on the Roadmap and the Version-view.

They are indeed not (yet) queryable (?) though they are searchable. The content of project custom fields is displayed on the project overview page.

It provides an easy way to bound additional data to each version, project, enumeration etc...

HTH and kind regards,

Mischa.

Thank you so much Mischa.

Searchable does help, but would be exactly what we need if queryable. I have seen the custom fields show up on project details and version details. Other than the amount of code needed to create that query screen (like the issue query), its very nice that these attributes are already attached to the project.

I submitted a feature request for this feature. In the meantime, we may try to write some pages that can query this outside of Redmine.

Also, im not sure if these are actually being shown in search results either. For example, I have a custom field on a project called 'Operating System', and when I search (i have two project, one of them has this field filled in with Windows), it does not display in the search results.

For reference: #4249.

You are indeed correct. It's not possible to mark custom fields of any type other than issues as searchable.

Kind regards,

Mischa.
