Why don't you just release 3.4.0?

Added by Robert Schneider almost 7 years ago

I'm waiting for weeks now for the new version. But you don't release it. Why? Instead, new tickets will be added to the version.

I don't understand why you don't just release the new version and put new tickets to version 3.5.0. Are there any reason for that?

Sorry for the impatience...

Regards,
Robert

I'm also waiting and looking forward to the next release, but I cannot get when it will be released.
IMO, the release day of version on Roadmap should be set as a guide.
Of course, it is a guide, maintainers should flexibly change so that it will not be a burden of development.

Thanks.

And on the roadmap we see the progress bar with 91% - for weeks now. Reminds me to the old days where one sits at a Windows machine, waiting at 99% for ages.

As much as I like Redmine, the internal development is quite intransparent and mysterious to me. What is a pity...

Yes! Please release 3.4.0.

We were so happy some weeks ago when the open issues was close to 3 or 4 issues.
Now we are back on 19. :(

Have a look at the issues that were recently added to 3.4.0 – they aren't new unsolved problems but most of them are accepted patches that are (almost) ready to merge. In general, this shouldn't postpone the release further (since merging is much quicker than solving new problems), but make it better when it's out :-)

Please also note, that Redmine is a community effort run by volunteers in their spare time. Good things take time, and I believe we should respect that.

I would think this could be moved to another version. I find it more satisfying to get more often releases with less changes. So that 'announced' features/fixes/changes get available sooner. And as mentioned, I prefer to see the progress bar is moving towards 100% and doesn't decrease.

What is about Plugin developers? Do they prefer more frequent versions? Or doesn't that matter to them?

Of course, this is not a claim, just a wish. I know about Open Source. Redmine gets all my respect!

Hello!

Please do not take this as a request, demand or claim. It should be healthy for people involved on any project to know the impressions they are communicating through their actions or decisions.

Have a look at the issues that were recently added to 3.4.0 – they aren't new unsolved problems but most of them are accepted patches that are (almost) ready to merge. In general, this shouldn't postpone the release further (since merging is much quicker than solving new problems), but make it better when it's out :-)

I understand, but if things are easy or almost ready shouldn't it be planned to 3.4.1 at some point?
For example #25842, the last new issue on 3.4.0.
It is a very nice addition and we also would like to have it.
But if compared with the tons of defects and features already done on 3.4.0, maybe it should be on 3.4.1 instead.
We already have version:3.5.0 on the roadmap. Maybe it is time to have 3.4.1 on the roadmap.

Please also note, that Redmine is a community effort run by volunteers in their spare time. Good things take time, and I believe we should respect that.

Of course. Sorry if this message was disrespectful in any way.

As Robert wrote on last message, this is not a claim.
Please take it just as a feedback that it looks like the 3.4.0 is being postponed by new issues.

Thanks a lot to all volunteers and donors that keep Redmine always evolving.

I'm also waiting and looking forward to the next release, but as a developer, I understand the version can not be released because someone wants it.
The release has a lot of good improvements, and therefore needs a lot of testing.
F.e. #25794 (from last week) resolves a defect introduced by #13072 (but was not assigned to this release).

On the other hand, maybe setting a target date would give Redmine users an indication when the release is expected?

Thanks a lot to the Redmine team and volunteers for all the good work!!

RE: Why don't you just release 3.4.0? - Added by Robert Schneider almost 7 years ago

Yes, a release date could be sufficient. As long as the date gets only set once and does not change anymore (only if it really cannot be avoided). Otherwise this would be no help.

Respect goes to all the developers and supporters. But consider also that there might be some thousands that are watching when the release is going to happen. You can forget about them, or you can give them a hint when the release gets out. That's some kind of respect to the users. Just a friendly hint so that they are not wasting their patience.

Once again the question, if anyone can answer that: What do Plugin developers think or prefer? Sooner or bigger releases?

Once again, Thanks the good work :)

I'm very small plugin developer. It is not much concern, sooner or bigger, from the developer's point of view.
Because everybody can get Redmine latest source from the repository. So I can continue to develop it.
In my case, CI for my plugin tests with Redmine trunk source and notifies the result everyday. If I get notification of breaking tests, I try to fix it. That's enough.

On the other hand, I will consider whether Redmine is to be released soon when I create a plan to release plugins.
Because my users will check whether my plugin support new Redmine version or not when new Redmine released.
So the plan of release day is most important for me.

But JUST my case, It may be different for other case.

Great news! Congratulations!

@GoMAEDA Thank you for adding this release date!

Would you also like to think about a release date for 3.5.0? For example, why not just say Dec. 2017? If you choose a date far in future you have enough time to do whatever you want. As a 'consumer' it is quite helpful to have some idea when the next release will be happen. There are so many OS projects where you know when the next release happens (Ubuntu, Fedora, ...). Don't you like this too? Although you often don't exactly know what will be part of the realease, you know that there will be one and you can look forward to and comply with it (for whatever). I find this helpful.

I would consider a general time-based release schedule for the Redmine project. I could think that also Plugin developers would find this helpful! It is of course a commitment that you need to adhere to. But I think everyone would appreciate it.

RE: Why don't you just release 3.4.0? - Added by Go MAEDA over 6 years ago

Robert Schneider, thank you for your suggestion.

Unfortunately I cannot decide due date of versions. Only Jean-Phillipe Lang can decide it.

But I absolutely agree with you. I think Redmine project should adopt time-based release like LibreOffice, Ubuntu, Mercurial and so on.

As I don't know the internal communication of the Redmine project, I thought you could discuss this with JPL somehow. Maybe you could have a vote or poll for this?
